Average Speed Cameras, also known as Point-To-Point cameras, are steadily increasing in number across Australia. With average speed cameras previously only being used in NSW for heavy vehicles now including cars, it's only a matter of time for the dozens of average speed cameras across NSW until they also include cars. In Victoria the additional sections of average speed cameras have been added to the Hume Freeway. Now as well as the Hume Freeway and the Peninsula Link Freeway, soon the Princes Hwy/Fwy in Gippsland and the Goulburn Valley Highway heading up to Shepparton will be covered with average speed cameras. Whilst people will have no problem if they stick within the speed limit, it is easy for people to go slightly over the speed limit when overtaking, in particular when there are others speeding up from behind them when they're overtaking and putting them under pressure. This can create considerable concern for drivers who feel they may be fined for having sped over the average speed camera section. I decided to add an average speed camera/point-to-point camera feature to the Speed and Camera Alerts feature of the Speed Camera Locations web site. Speed and Camera Alerts is a web app that can aid drivers to stay compliant with the speed limit and also avoid the financial risk due to cameras they may pass on their journey. The average speed camera feature has now been built into the Speed and Camera alerts for all states and territories and the data will soon be modified to enable the feature. For Victoria the two new average speed camera sections on the Goulburn Valley Highway and the Princes Fwy/Hwy have been added even though construction is a long way from complete. This will enable drivers to become familiar with the camera locations and create good driving habits to avoid the financial risk of cameras. For NSW the two sections of average speed cameras currently under trial have been added already. As future sections of average speed cameras start to cover light vehicles they will be added. The NT and Tasmania do not currently have fixed average speed cameras. In Tasmania I believe they have portable cameras that can be set up to create an average speed camera zone. The ACT has average speed cameras covering a section of Hindmarsh Avenue in both directions. WA has average speed cameras and also is trialling portable cameras to create average speed camera zones. QLD and South Australia have average speed cameras
Whilst I would like to, it is not possible for me to test every average speed camera zone across Australia.
Any feedback that lets me know Speed and Camera Alerts works for average speed camera zones in their area is more
than welcome.
