Notes

For NZ where red light cameras are located at an intersection, the location used will be the stop line for the lane or the middle of the lanes. For spot speed cameras the location will be the centre of the lanes adjacent to the spot speed camera. The actual location where the spot speed camera is estimated to be under 50m. The Speed and Camera Alert app provides a warning a driver is approaching a camera at 200m, but with GPS delays, this may go down to 150m, which is still plenty of time to correct any bad driving habits.

For the Speed Cameras NZ / Red light cameras NZ page, if your current location is outside of the area covered by red light cameras and speed cameras, the map will centre on Wellington, otherwise the map will centre on your current location.

In terms of the distance from the camera for the spot speed cameras in New Zealand, I used AI to do a calculation. The spot speed camera at Coatesville Riverhead Highway, Coatsville, Auckland, NZ (ID S000130), according to the compliance certificate has to be aligned 22 degrees to the road. A rough measurement using Google maps indicates the lanes are approximately 3.3m wide. The spot speed camera is approximately 4m from the edge of the road. This gives us roughly 14m for a straight line angled at 22 degrees to the road, to pass through the middle of the first lane, the closest lane to the camera heading north towards the camera, and approximately 22m for the centre of the furtherest lane for cars heading south away from the camera. Basically the distance to the camera for capturing speeding vehicles appears to be quite short. It would be good to see if this calculation corresponds to the photographic evidence of speeding fines.

Spot speed cameras are bidirectional and can capture multiple lanes of traffic and traffic travelling in both directions.

New Zealand does not currently have combined red light/speed cameras. The cameras are either a red light camera, or a speed camera.
